As Missourians and their nearly 315,000 registered boats head to the waterways to enjoy the end of summer, the coast guard sent out reminders that they had 150 boating accidents in 2009 which caused $1,577,396 in damage.
Mark Kolesar, 46, of Hazel Green, died in a boating accident on Lake Guntersville Sunday evening. Kolesar was pleasure boating with his family around 7 p.m. when he fell off the swim platform at the rear of the boat, according to Sgt. Randy Jones of the Alabama Marine Police.

The U.S. Coast Guard has launched a Great Lakes safe boating awareness effort focused on paddle sports. The Paddles Up Great Lakes campaign runs through Friday. Coast Guard and other authorities will pass out safety and education information as well as self-adhesive identification stickers for boats to canoe and kayak owners.
